Beginning

Music Criticism from the Utterly Unqualified

This is the beginning of a project that I expect will take years to complete. In fact, I think it is possible that by the time I reach the end, it will be obsolete. What I am setting out to do here is to listen to every album on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time

I love music. But I feel like my experience of music is much more narrow than I would like. I listen mostly to country and classic rock. From Willie Nelson to Kacey Musgraves and from The Beatles to Journey, I have it mostly covered. But I have big blindspots when it comes to most pop music and anything produced after the 1980's. So I'm hoping to broaden my musical horizons.

The other part of this project is, well, the blog you're reading right now. My plan is to chronicle my experience on this journey. I want to write a little something about each album I listen to. Don't expect anything like a full blown review. I don't have the credentials for that. But I do want to share some thoughts and maybe some favorite tracks from each album. We'll see how this develops.

Which brings me to the timeline for this endeavor. In short: there isn't one. I considered trying to listen to one album a day, which would take about a year and a half to get through all 500. But I don't know if that gives enough time to really give these albums their due. But one album a week is close to ten years.

So I don't have a firm timeline on this project. My gut tells me I can probably average about 2 albums per week. But I will probably just have to play that by ear.

Anyway, I hope you'll join me on this journey!

P.S. I recommend subscribing to this newsletter (it’s free!) but you can also follow this twitter account.

P.P.S I am adding tracks I like to this playlist on Apple Music.

In the meantime, tell your friends!
